Range of Motion: Shoulder Flexion

range of motion Jun 30, 2023

To test Shoulder Flexion range of motion with an inclinometer, follow these steps:

  1. Have the client start in a seated or standing position with one arm locked straight in a neutral position in front of their body.
  2. Align the smart device alongside the client’s humerus, before instructing them to flex their shoulder in front of them and as high as they can go.
  3. Once the highest point in range of motion is achieved, press the pause, and then the save button to view the results. NB: Should be aiming for at least 180 degrees of shoulder flexion.

It is important to ensure that the inclinometer is placed correctly and securely, and that the patient is instructed to raise their arm forward without leaning forward or arching their back. The test should be performed slowly and smoothly to obtain an accurate measurement of Shoulder Flexion range of motion.

Normal Shoulder Flexion range of motion is typically considered to be between 0-180 degrees, with 0 degrees being the arm by the side of the body and 180 degrees being the arm fully overhead.
