Girths Measurement: Waist
May 22, 2023To measure a client's waist girth, follow these steps:
1. Ask the client to remove any bulky clothing and to stand up straight with their arms at their sides.
2. Locate the client's natural waistline, which is typically the narrowest part of the waist.
3. Place the tape measure or string around the client's waist, making sure it's snug but not too tight and is parallel to the floor.
4. Ask the client to take a deep breath and then exhale normally.
5. Make sure the tape measure or string is level and straight around the client's waist.
6. Read the measurement on the tape measure or mark the string and measure it afterward.
Once you have measured the client's waist girth, you can use this information to determine the client's waist-to-hip ratio, which is a measure of the distribution of body fat. A waist-to-hip ratio of 0.85 or higher in women and 0.90 or higher in men is considered to be at increased risk for health problems. You can also use this information to create a personalized fitness plan for the client that includes exercises to target the abdominal muscles.
