Range of Motion: Shoulder Abduction

range of motion Jul 01, 2023

To test the shoulder abduction range of motion with an inclinometer, the following steps can be taken:

  1. Have the client adopt a seated or standing position with one arm locked straight on the side of their trunk.
  2. Using the Measurz inclinometer, place it behind the client’s arm and instruct them to abduct their shoulder as far as they can.
  3. Once full range of motion is achieved, or they experience pain or discomfort, press the pause, followed by the save button to view the results. NB: Ideally aiming for a 180 degrees of shoulder abduction.

The normal range of motion for shoulder abduction is considered to be between 0-180 degrees. However, the range may vary depending on the individual's age, gender, and physical condition.
